You can spend less time on social media before encountering a post about losing weight.
It may be someone touting their most recent weight-loss goal. Another person may lament that their diet is too tight to indulge in their favorite snack.
Weight reduction is a multibillion-dollar industry in the United States, and it’s no surprise. According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, over two-thirds of Americans are overweight or obese.
Furthermore, one in every six toddlers and adolescents aged 2 to 19 is deemed obese.
Healthcare experts and academics strive for dependable and scientifically validated weight loss techniques yearly. At the same time, extreme diets and weight reduction regimes ebb and flow in favor, both the insane (cabbage soup) and the more reasonable (Mediterranean diet).
Two of those regimens, the vegan diet, and the ketogenic diet, are opposed in terms of dietary approach, yet they’re both popular due to their promise to shed pounds. Here’s how they stack up.
Keto vs. vegan diets
The ketogenic (keto) diet is a low-carb, high-fat diet. It emphasizes high-fat foods like dairy and avocado, moderate protein portions, and minimal carbohydrates.
This excludes several vegetables, fruits, and grains. Sugar is also out.
The vegan diet is plant-based. It excludes any foods derived from animals, although it is high in vegetables, fruits, and whole grains.
According to research, both approaches can result in weight loss. What it takes to get there — and how likely you are to stick with it — are elements that influence whether either of these diets will be effective in the long run.
How does the keto diet work?

How does the vegan diet work?
A plant-based diet is “often low in fat, protein, and overall calories, so people often feel like they can eat all day and still lose weight,” according to Danielle Aberman, RDN, a dietitian who specializes in working with migraine sufferers as well as those who struggle to lose and keep weight off.
Research reveals that vegans are thinner and have a lower body mass index (BMI) than nonvegans. They are also more likely to have lower cholesterol levels.
Plant-based eaters often ingest a more extensive range of vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients than omnivores due to the nature of the food vegans eat. They also consume fewer calories on average than nonvegans.
A look at the science of keto and vegan diets
Over a year, vegans dropped 9.3 pounds more than persons who did not follow a plant-based diet, according to one research. The research did not ask participants to restrict their calorie consumption or exercise regularly.
A keto diet has demonstrated modest weight loss benefits in previous mouse trials. It has also shown encouraging gifts in treating obesity-related diseases such as type 2 diabetes.
A lot of keto research has been done on rats and mice only. Human studies are few and between, but more are being conducted, mainly due to the keto diet’s growing popularity.
A 2009 research discovered that after six months, most of those on a low-carb diet were no longer in ketosis.
According to a 2017 research, most keto-fed rats lose weight in the first few weeks of the diet, but the weight reduction does not last over the 22-week trial.
One explanation for this might be because, despite initial success, many keto dieters return to their tried-and-true food choices after a period of time. That might be because weight reduction has slowed or the stringent keto diet was too difficult to follow.

“When you bring up the concept of which diet is more successful for weight loss, I would only label a diet successful if it is sustainable,” said Ashley Chambers, RD, an Indiana University Health nutritionist.
“Most weight-loss diet trends, such as the ketogenic diet and vegan diets, will result in weight loss if followed strictly, but they often restrict so much that people struggle to maintain them in the long term.”
Dr. Charlie Seltzer, a board-certified physician in obesity medicine and clinical exercise expert in Philadelphia, concurs.
“You can only judge a program’s success if you can stick to it,” said Seltzer, specializing in weight reduction, lifestyle, and fitness solutions.
“It doesn’t really matter which is theoretically better if it’s unmaintainable in the long run.”
According to Seltzer, many people may attempt the keto diet and expect to see some success at first.
He does, however, warn that the folks you see publicizing their weight reduction achievements on social media are just the tip of the keto iceberg. They are the ones that have devised a strategy that works for them. That does not represent the vast majority of people who have yet to find success with the diet.
“For every 100 people who try it, 99 will probably fail,” Seltzer added. “Because you won’t be able to do either for the rest of your life.” They’re challenging to do.”
The difficulty with the keto diet, according to Kristin Koskinen, RDN, who has a private practice in Washington State, is what you need to consume.
“My concern about keto is the long-term issues that may arise from limiting carbohydrates, which ultimately means plant-based foods,” said Koskinen.
“My recommendation is that keto be used as a therapeutic tool or as a short-term weight loss strategy.” Consult your healthcare professional before beginning a keto diet if you have diabetes or any other known health issue.”
But it doesn’t mean Koskinen is a vegan regarding losing weight.
“While a vegan diet can be part of a healthy lifestyle, it does not always result in weight loss,” Koskinen explained.
“In my experience, choosing a vegan diet must be combined with other weight-loss lifestyle habits, such as stress management and regular exercise.”
No quick fixes
These experts, and many others, emphasize that there are no fast fixes for weight loss. If you want it to be sustainable and long-term, you must put in the effort.
“Changing habits is very difficult,” Seltzer explained. “It is challenging to make major lifestyle changes overnight.” It’s considerably tougher to restore your former lifestyle after a fixed amount of time.”
Finally, the prescription for losing weight may be exceedingly customized – one that works only for you.
“It’s critical to develop an acceptable and sustainable plan based on your personal food preferences, lifestyle, and level of motivation to change from what has failed you in the past,” Aberman said.
The bottom line
The vegan and ketogenic diets are opposites in terms of dietary approach, yet they’re both famous for their claim to help you lose weight.
Experts will tell you that you may expect to see improvements with any diet — but they may not persist unless you can maintain this new lifestyle over time.
